History of chopsticks
Chinese chopsticks play a very important role in the culture of China. Indeed, the Chinese have been using them for nearly 3000 years! Today, they are called kuàizi (筷子), but originally they were called Zhu. At that time, people in China used to cook their food by steaming or in boiling water. It was difficult for them to dip the food in the broth because the water was so hot. That's why they invented chopsticks to catch or stick the food.
Since their invention, chopsticks have greatly evolved. Chinese chopsticks only reached their shape of two rods of the same length during the Shang Dynasty (XVI -XI centuries BC). During this same period, King Zhou even ordered all his craftsmen to make chopsticks from elephant tusks. Ivory chopsticks were then the height of luxury and refinement.
But if time has made the chopsticks evolve, they have also greatly participated in marking history. These two small sticks have indeed marked the passage from a period where we ate with our hands, to a new era in which kitchen utensils had their place, and therefore cooking... The invention of Asian chopsticks marks a turning point in Chinese cuisine, Asian culinary culture but also in the history of the whole world.
Handling the art of Chinese chopsticks
Chinese people teach their children to use chopsticks from a very young age. It is therefore obvious that they perfect the art of handling them. But if many Westerners and foreigners try to use chopsticks, the exercise is often very difficult. Here are some tips to learn how to use a pair of chopsticks. First, the fingers must be positioned on top of the chopsticks, and the chopsticks must not cross over the fingers.
Then, you have to hold them with the thumb, the index, the middle and the ring fingers a little bit back. When trying to catch meat, vegetables, or any other food, the index and middle fingers should be used to control the chopsticks. The secret to using chopsticks is practice! Try eating with chopsticks over and over again, and even the challenge of catching sticky rice will be a thing of the past!
Now that you're a master of chopsticks, you can choose the ones that suit you best to accompany your Asian meals, or not. Because yes, there are lots of different chopsticks! The most common ones are bamboo chopsticks, wooden chopsticks or plastic chopsticks. But there are also chopsticks made of ivory, bone, jade, porcelain, silver... Today, silver chopsticks are a great luxury item!
In addition to the different materials, there are different types. There are chopsticks for beginners, chopsticks for children, fancy chopsticks, disposable chopsticks, cooking chopsticks, long chopsticks... It's up to you to choose the pair of chopsticks that suits you to enjoy your Chinese noodles, sushi, Chinese ravioli, Peking duck, or even your Western meals!
